Includes surface water resources in the River Murray and its floodplain from the South Australian border down to and including Lake Alexandrina and Lake Albert.

Through the River Murray area, South Australia extracts approximately 7 per cent of the Basin’s total extracted water.

Tributaries

New South Wales/Victorian Murray, portions of Angas and Bremer rivers, Finnis River and Currency Creek.

Major towns

Renmark, Waikerie, Murray Bridge.

Barkindji, Maraura, Muthi Muthi and Nyeri Nyeri; Ngintait and Ngarrindjeri; Kaurna and Peramangk.

Water use

Water users include irrigated horticulture such as citrus, wine grapes, olives, almonds, walnuts, pistachios, stone fruit, avocado and vegetables. On the floodplains before the river enters Lake Alexandrina, the river flats are irrigated for dairying. There is also industrial use, Metropolitan Adelaide and town water, and high-value ecological communities across the catchment.
