About the Northern Basin

this is an image of the position of the catchment in the Murray–Darling Basin

The Northern Basin area makes up about half of the total Murray–Darling Basin area. The northern Basin primarily comprises a range of inland systems along tributaries of the Darling River; however, in contrast to the Southern Basin, hydrological connectivity between individual catchments in the Northern Basin is limited.

Cotton is the major irrigated activity in the Northern Basin, particularly in the Condamine–Balonne, NSW and Qld Border Rivers and Namoi catchments, followed by pasture and cereal production.

The Northern Basin contains diverse natural environments including internationally significant wetlands such as the Macquarie Marshes and the lower Gwydir. The Northern Basin rivers support domestic and agricultural water use, cultural values and practices of local Aboriginal Traditional Owners, tourism and recreation.
